Individual therapy allows you to unlock your potential and evolve into your true self.
Often, people become entangled with the mundaneness and negativity that exists in their everyday life, and they tend to lose focus on their goals. Judgements and decisions become clouded, and people become overwhelmed. However, there is hope in the form of therapy. Therapy generally uses talking, rather than medication as a way forward to help you work through your emotional state.
Clinical psychology refers to a range of treatments that assist with emotional challenges, mental health problems, and certain psychiatric conditions.
As an experienced Clinical Psychologist, Marina is able to provide direct services for those who need help with mental or behavioural issues. She also administers and interprets cognitive tests, diagnoses mental illnesses, creates treatment plans and conducts psychotherapy.
Marina Genis offers individual therapy for the following:
Marina also offers Relationship and Couples Therapy.
Your first visit with Marina is all about getting to know you and what brought you to your appointment. She may ask you to describe some of the symptoms you are experiencing and the concerns you may have.
These may include asking:
Marina will ask you to describe the history of your symptoms (when the problem first began and how long it has been happening). She will also ask whether the problem has changed since it first began and the frequency, duration and intensity of the problem.
Marina will also be interested to learn more about your family, the nature of relationships with family members and whether there is any family history of substance abuse or mental health issues.
She may also ask about your developmental history (i.e. your childhood and teenage years), your relationship history, previous history of psychological help.
Current information about your lifestyle – including work, study, leisure activities, friendships and relationships, can also be useful in getting to know you and understanding what you are experiencing.
Marina will also be interested in your goals and expectations for therapy and what specific changes you would like to see.
Equipped with all of the above information, Marina will provide you with feedback and her views on the presenting issue(s), possible causes and maintaining factors. Based on this assessment, she will develop an evidence-based treatment suited to your unique situation.
Futur therapy sessions involve working collaboratively on your goals and chipping away at the presenting problem(s) to improve your coping mechanisms and mood.
Marina will make a recommendation about the frequency of your therapy sessions based on your individual circumstances. After your first session, Marina will most likely recommend booking a series of therapy sessions to ensure you are able to work consistently towards achieving your goals.
In general, sessions last for 50 minutes, once a week.
The length of therapy differs; some forms of therapy last only a few sessions, while others are long-term, lasting for months, years or a lifetime.
